School Construction and Supporting Facilities
School construction has been one of Grace Charity Foundation’s flagship initiatives since Its earliest days. Even before the Foundation was formally established, its volunteers began rebuilding unsafe and deteriorating schools in remote mountainous communities, making school construction one of the organisation’s founding projects.
As China’s education system has developed over the years, Grace Charity has continued to invest in creating safer and better learning environments for students. Beyond constructing new schools, the Foundation also renovates teaching buildings and student dormitories while improving essential school facilities.
These improvements include libraries and Book Donations, multi-purpose classrooms, canteens, bathhouses, as well as classroom furniture, computers, projectors and other educational equipment that support teaching and learning.
School construction remains the Foundation’s largest programme by expenditure. From 1999 to 2026, Grace Charity has funded the construction or renovation of more than 1,500 schools, teaching buildings and student dormitories.
Most of these projects have been carried out in Guizhou Province, with additional projects across Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Henan, Guangxi, Hunan, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Jiangxi, Qinghai, Guangdong, Shanxi and Shandong. In 2019, the programme was expanded to include school reconstruction projects in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
A defining feature of Grace Charity’s work is the dedication of its volunteers. For more than two decades, volunteers have travelled at their own expense to conduct site visits, assess local needs and monitor construction projects, working closely with local education authorities to help ensure that donated funds are used effectively.
School Construction Projects Guidelines
Grace Charity Foundation supports school construction and renovation projects that meet clearly defined criteria to ensure that donations achieve a lasting impact.
1. Serve communities in economically disadvantaged areas or involve the replacement of unsafe school buildings.
2. Renovate or expand existing schools to improve learning conditions.
3. Recognise donors’ contributions through appropriate acknowledgement, such as commemorative plaques or building naming where appropriate.
4. Receive matching financial support from local authorities.
5. Have a commitment from the relevant authorities that the school will continue operating for the long term.
6. Clearly demonstrate the educational need and expected benefits of any supporting facilities.
Book Donation Programme
How the Programme Began
During visits to schools in remote communities, Grace Charity volunteers observed that many schools had very few books beyond their basic textbooks. To address this need, two long-serving volunteers, Ms. Wong Nipping and her husband Mr. Luk Moping, took the initiative to establish a book donation programme.
In 2004, they personally travelled from Hong Kong to Shenzhen to select suitable books, contributed their own funds, and organised the purchase and transportation of thousands of books to schools in need. Their dedication led to the establishment of Grace Charity’s Book Donation Group, which continues to support school libraries today.

Through the Book Donation Programme, Grace Charity hopes to foster a lifelong love of reading among children in remote communities, encouraging curiosity, creativity and independent learning beyond the classroom.
Our Impact
Since 2004, the Book Donation Programme has donated books to more than 2,000 schools across mainland China, with total donations exceeding HK$16 million.
Beneficiary schools are located in provinces including Guizhou, Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Yunnan and Sichuan etc.
